Acupuncture
Acupuncturists insert hair-thin needles to specifically chosen acupuncture points throughout the body to restore the flow of qi, balance the body’s energy, stimulate healing, and promote relaxation. Acupuncture ultimately takes a different approach to healing, that can benefit a wide range of conditions, often where traditional western approaches have failed. Acupuncture is tailored to the individual patient, using a number of different diagnostic techniques prior to point selection for needling.
Moxibustion: The use of a smouldering herb called ‘Moxa’, usually attached to the top of acupuncture needles to warm them. This can enhance the treatment in certain situations.
Cupping therapy: Specialist cups are placed on the skin to create suction, and are either left in place for a few minutes (which may cause bruising) or are slid slowly over oiled skin. Circulation is improved and ‘fresh’ blood comes to the area which reduces pain and inflammation, and promotes healing. This is an ancient method, traditionally used to treat lung conditions, now used to treat a wider range of issues.
Gua Sha: Another ancient therapy originating in China, where oil is applied to the skin and a blunt edged instrument is used to press-stroke the skin. Most people find the treatment pleasant. Gua Sha has a similar effect to cupping and often causes a rash, which fades in a few days. It’s powerful anti-inflammatory action increases circulation and range of movement, reduces pain, inflammation and oedema, and breaks down scar tissue.
Acupuncture and Chinese manual therapies are safe and effective treatments for a very wide range of ailments: Musculoskeletal pain, nerve pain, headache, migraine, digestive disorders, menopause and women’s health, insomnia, lung disorders, mood disorders, including stress, anxiety and depression, auto-immune disorders, skin problems, fatigue, allergies such as hay-fever, hormonal and neurological disorders, overactive bladder and more.
